IF HIS MOTHER USING his proper name when she asked to speak with him was a bad sign, Honeysuckle’s silence on the ride back to their hotel was ominous. When they reached the inn, Honeysuckle went directly upstairs to the room.

Ruddy retrieved the key from the young man at the desk. He took the stairs two at a time. The sooner he could sit her down and cool her temper, the better. She was doing a first rate job of conveying her fury without the silent treatment. She refused his aid in climbing down from the cab. The steps the driver provided were a foot short of the ground. Ruddy barely laid a hand on her waist when she knocked it away and choked off a low grunt when she landed. She immediately snatched Winky’s leash from him and headed inside without looking Ruddy in the eye.

“Are you ever going to talk to me again?” Ruddy asked after they went into the room.

Her silence continued as she yanked on the fingers of one glove then the other.

“Honeysuckle, I know you’re upset and angry, but let’s talk it out. We can still have a wonderful holiday.”

She spun and hurled a glove at him. Ruddy caught it midair. Had it connected it would’ve hit him dead center chest. For no good reason, he thought she’d do well on a cricket pitch with her aim. It’d be worth the haranguing from the cricketers to see the faces of all the male bowlers she’d put to shame. Her second flung glove went wild to his right but Ruddy caught it as well. His mind returned to the unpleasantness of day.

“Honeysuckle-”

“I told you this would happen! I told you!” Her hat sailed over to the bed.

“Honeysuckle-”

“Be quiet.” She gave him her back and poured herself a glass of wine before turning around. “This is my grievance and I will have my say.”

Ruddy had requested the inn’s landlord have an open bottle of their finest red wine waiting in the room for them. In was in such a good mood when he’d ordered it. At the time he thought when they came back from his parents, he and Honeysuckle would have a glass or two and maybe a cuddle, before going to dinner. He wished he could have the optimism of that moment back.

She took a big swallow and then sat on the dressing table chair, similar to the one in her dressing room at the Odeon. “Sit,” she ordered.

He pulled the desk chair over and positioned it in front of hers. “I hope you’ll give me a chance to talk after you’re finished.”

She closed her eyes and bent her head. She held her wine glass between both hands. He saw her slight tremble and suspected her clasp on the wine was meant to hide the quiver. Ruddy leaned forward and place his hands over hers. “Are you crying?” He pressed his hands a little harder over hers. “Please don’t cry. We’ll-”

Her head snapped up. “Do I look like I’m crying? I’m trembling with anger toward you.
