The feeling of pavement under her feet delivered its miraculous effects. Lena picked up the pace, and after a while, she was almost sprinting. She ran as fast as she could, her mind finally silent. She’d opened the second letter last night, and to her disappointment, it was empty. The file might have had words once, but Ludwig had deleted them.

Exhausted from all that had happened in the last two days, she’d fallen asleep early, but had woken up feeling more tired. She knew she had to clear her head.

Good thing running costs nothing, she had thought sadly as she’d laced up her designer running shoes. The words from Ludwig’s letter spiraled all sorts of emotions in her. She grieved. Not because he was dead, but for the life he didn’t get to experience. The poor man had lived a lie all his life and blamed her for it.

Lena reached her maximum heart rate and had to stop. She leaned forward, the sun pleasantly warming her sweaty back, but something distracted her. Her breathing had calmed down already, but someone else’s panting rippled around her, like an asthma attack. On the green grass, Phillip’s courier/bodyguard had collapsed.

“I like you better when you sit at home,” he said, struggling for air.

Lena pulled a small bottle from her belt, handed it to him, and helped him up. The sun was strong, and she feared he might pass out.

“Thank you.” He gulped down the water and wiped the sweat from his brow. “You’re in good shape. I’ll have to ask for a raise for this.”

“Not that I want to cut into your income stream, but maybe you should ask for a transfer rather than a raise,” she said, ready to continue jogging.

“Lena, someone killed your husband, and until they find out who and why, you may well be in danger,” he said as if he were talking about the cause and effect of everyday occurrences. He obviously knew enough about murder and danger.

Lena opened her mouth to retort, but... Phillip had hired him to protect her until they found out who had killed Ludwig? She was so stupid!

“You’re amazing!” She hugged and kissed her bodyguard on the cheek, not minding at all that they were both sweaty. “I promise I’ll run slower.”

And she did, smiling all the way.

Messages from Charlie waited for her at home. All bad news. And one from the police. Surprising news.

Lena took a shower and sent a message to Carla. She would not avoid her friend any longer.
