Chapter Four
“Filthy, rotten, son of a bitch bastard.”“Wow. And you were so quiet on the way here.”
Jesse turned to find Jasyn leaning against the open doorway of the cave-cum-prison cell Max had stuck her in. The candles lit on copper fixtures in the rough hewn walls were the only light in the dank cave, but she could see enough to know that no one had been here in a very long time. Long enough for whatever was rustling in the corner to move in. She shuddered, pulling the fur blanket they’d thrown in tightly around herself.
“Swearing keeps me from freezing to death. Thanks for the help, Dydarren. I thought you came to protect me, not stand by and watch as I’m tossed into a pit to rot by a grumpy warrior with a Dudley Do-Right complex.”
Jasyn sighed. “Jesse, please. Max had no other choice. I believe him when he says this is the safest place you can be. Even with how careful we were, they still sensed your presence. Elam, Kit and Max are all outside in order to ensure your protection.”
He lowered his voice. “Honestly, I had no idea this place was even here. That there were more than a handful of Sariel guards in existence. There were stories, most of them too farfetched for anyone to believe. All we were ever told about Kit’s people was that they were different. Powerful, old and utterly loyal to the Mediator’s family. A blood oath, Lux said. But I don’t think anyone, even the Sariels, have stepped foot in this fortress of a settlement before. Did you see it when we came in? It’s incredible.”
It was. A valley hidden by endless fog. A giant city built into a Scottish mountainside. Ironically, she’d taken photos of this range for a travel magazine years ago. The Black Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye. Jesse had fallen in love with the rough, breathtaking landscape. She’d wanted to come back ever since. Only not as a prisoner.
How had they stayed hidden for so long? The British Isles were small and crowded, the mountain ranges anthills in comparison to most. Yet they not only lived here, they’d hewn a masterpiece of craftsmanship out of the rock. Columns of rock, smoothed and polished. Villas floating against the mountain’s face, connected by a series of giant, spiral steps. It was magnificent. Enchanted.
This was Kit’s home. She’d never seen it before, not in any of her visions of him. But it was easy to imagine him here, among all this majesty in the mist. It hit her again, like a sucker punch to the gut. He was actually here. A few feet away.
Ignoring her.
“He didn’t even talk to me, Jasyn. I know he recognized me. But after that first…” She turned her back, unwilling to show how deeply Kit’s silence had hurt her.
Jasyn’s hands cupped her shoulders through the blanket, pulling her into a friendly embrace. “I wish I could help you, but I’m not the one to turn to for advice about romance.
