“Just do this one little thing for me,” he coaxes, opening his gown more and moving himself against my leg. “Help me, please, to ease my suffering. No one else can help me now,” he murmurs urgently and guides my hand to where he wants it, rubbing it up and down, making gasping sounds. “Yes, yes, you are good and generous. Yes, yes, that is my good, good girl,” he keeps saying, and I close my eyes and see not his blue, hooded ones but Richard’s quick brown ones, and I hear the rustling of Richard’s blue raincoat, but it is Monsieur who gives a long, satisfied sigh.

He takes out the handkerchief that has dried my eyes and wipes himself and draws himself up, adjusting his robe. He rises and walks to the door, leaving me alone with my body crashing wildly like water falling into the dark.
