Water was also important for all sorts of other reasons. Since the existence of Tenochtitlan depended on water management for the safety of the city, the Aztecs developed ingenious waterworks to facilitate the movement of goods and water. Aqueducts supplied the drinking water, while canals, wharves and flood control gates enabled reliable waterborne commerce. The Aztecs maintained control of the input of water into the lakes and marshes, thereby keeping the salt content of the otherwise closed system under control. Though they accomplished this with hard labor, the Aztecs ensured that Tláloc, the god of water who controlled rain and storms, was content through worship and sacrifice. One of the two elevated sanctuaries on the great central pyramid of Tenochtitlan was dedicated to Tláloc.
