Chapter Eighteen

Tasha

My legs ached from lack of practice on the ice despite having been a fervent skater as a child. It reminded me of the old saying my mom used to bark at me when I’d spend too much time on the couch watching TV.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it.”

“Linc,” I playfully whined. “I feel like my legs are Jell-O. Can we take a break?”

Lincoln turned around and skated backward, smiling at me. “You sure you can’t do another hour? I’m just getting warmed up.”

I slouched, feeling the stiff pull on my back muscles that were already screaming about the stiffness they were in for tomorrow. I pouted in his direction, and he laughed, reaching out for my hand and tugging me toward the exit of the rink.

“Come on, you baby,” he said, poking me in the ribs.

“Not all of us are pro hockey players, thank you,” I replied.

“Hey,” he said, stopping me with a hand. “I’m not a pro. Not yet anyway.”

We stepped off the ice, and my legs wobbled even more. It was like that first step on land after getting off a boat. “That’s a hell of a workout,” I said, clinging to the railing as we made our way to a bench.

Linc chuckled. “I know. Now you can see why I’m always so sweaty when I get back. Try pushing a puck around while you do it.”

“No thanks,” I said. “I may have hit my quota of ice skating for the year.”

Lincoln got a slightly disappointed look on his face and nodded. “It’s certainly not for everyone.”

I reached down as we sat and unlaced my boots, ready to feel sturdy on my feet once more. I hadn’t realized how weak my ankles were until I was depending on them to keep me upright on thin metal blades.

“This was really fun, Tash. Thank you,” Lincoln said, smiling at me, his skates already off and in his bag.

“How did you...?”

“Want some help?”

I nodded, and Linc leaned down, unlacing my boots faster than I could even unlace my dance shoes, and pulling them off me just as fast.

“I guess when you do it every day it just becomes second nature.”

“Apparently,” I said, grinning. “You should pull that trick out at parties.”

“Why?” he said, grinning in a silly way. “Is this not a good enough party trick?”

I watched in horror as he bent his thumb backward to a hellish extent and squealed as he moved it around. “That is so nasty,” I cried.

“I know,” he said with boyish glee.

We were interrupted by the sound of a small child crying nearby, and Lincoln’s head whipped around looking for the source.

Two benches over from us, a girl who looked about seven whimpered as she stared at her skates, unlaced and hanging limply off her feet. Lincoln stood and went to her, crouching down so he would be her height.

“Hey there,” he said. “You having a little trouble with your skates?”

The girl sniffled and nodded. “They’re too hard to tie.”

Linc smiled at her.
