Chapter Eighteen
Milo
I catch up to her right as she’s about to slip behind the wheel of a vehicle that could probably be considered a classic at this point if it wasn’t covered in rust. It took me a beat to realize she was leaving me after everything we just shared, and that alone pissed me off to a point that I wanted to withdraw.
But that’s the old Milo. This new and improved version, the one who has allowed a sliver of heat to thaw his frozen heart, realizes that communication is the key to sustaining a relationship.
If that’s what we even have. The way Maisy blathers on, cock blocking me at every turn, I don’t even know anymore.
I’m still reeling over her words. Does she even understand that she’s showing more concern for me in this fucked up situation than for herself? And dammit, that’s just not right. But I can’t prove her own worth to her, that’s something she needs to find inside her own heart.
All I can do is help her on the journey.
I clamp a hand down on her slender shoulder. With a start, she whirls around, her eyes blazing daggers at me.
“Where are you going?”
Her lips part. “What?”
I smile through her confusion. This isn’t going well. “You heard me.”
My hand drifts up to her shoulder again, but she evades and shrugs me off. “Don’t be trite. Jenny will be pissed if I don’t get home.”
I sober because I realize that I’m not getting through to her. I might have missed my chance when I let her walk out the door. “No.”
Her forehead creases, and my hand itches to reach out and smooth the lines away. I love how gorgeous she is when she smiles, and it annoys me that it doesn’t happen often enough. “I’m leaving.”
“No,” I say again, stepping closer, caging her in between her vehicle and my body. “Come back inside. We’re not done. Not by a longshot.” My hand skims up her arm, needing the physical contact, needing to savor the delicate skin of her arm.
She shivers and pulls her arm close to her side. “Why?”
A surge of annoyance flattens me. She’s keeping herself protected. From me. I need to touch her, to get through to her that way. If I did it before, I can do it again. I curl a finger beneath her chin and tilt her face up so she can’t look away from me. “Because I want to fuck you. I want to sink so deep inside you that I don’t know where I end, and you begin. Because I want that tragic look off your face, and it’s the only way I know how.”
“What?” She steps back, putting a hand up between us. “It was a mistake the first time.”
“Don’t you fucking tell me that it was a mistake,” I growl, looming over her. I’m about to throw her up over my shoulder like a sack of potatoes unless she starts to see sense.
“I can’t believe you’re raising your voice to me,” she says, narrowing her eyes.
