Juliet

“Again.” Darius’s voice rumbled through me like a bad dream.

I hated him.

Or rather, my body did.

Yet my aching legs moved on his command, my feet hurtling over the ground outside as I forced myself to complete another lap around the grounds.

Every evening this week had started with a light breakfast and some stretching, followed by this insane series of activities Darius referred to as “conditioning.” It went on for hours, until dinner. We only stopped when I needed water or food. Three days of training, and I was already done with it. Especially the running.

Sweat beaded against my skin, my breath labored from the endless trials. I thought the Coventus had been hard on me. Darius was slowly disabusing me of that notion.

“Twenty push-ups,” he said as I completed the circle. “Now.”

I collapsed to the ground and considered just lying there. What would he do? Bite me? My blood heated at the prospect. He hadn’t touched me since Trevor and Ivan’s visit. I’d woken alone in Darius’s bed with a note that said to get ready and meet him at the dining table. Then I spent the last two sleeps in my own room while he rested elsewhere. Despite spending most of our nights together exercising, I missed him.

“Push-ups, Juliet.”

My gaze flicked up to his as a denial tickled my lips, but the threat in his gaze sent me into motion. Vampires loved to punish, and Darius was no different. Although, I usually enjoyed his brand of castigation.

How would he react if I refused? He couldn’t force me to run. Well, not entirely true. He could compel me. That might hurt more than operating at my own pace. Still, it could be fun to deny him.

Listen to yourself! a logical part of me chastised. You’ve clearly lost your mind if you think challenging a vampire is a good idea.

Not a vampire, but Darius…

“What are you doing?” he asked, his voice holding a touch of irritation.

“Um...” I started doing push-ups again. “Sorry, Sire.”

“Twenty more,” he growled.

I narrowed my gaze at the ground and fell back to my knees to stare up at him. “Why? What purpose does this serve?”

His eyebrows shot upward. “Are you questioning my command?”

“No, I’m requesting a purpose.” I could hear the obedient version of myself screaming in my head, but I ignored her. “I want to know why we’re doing this.”

He crouched before me in his jeans, elbows braced on his knees. “You’re defying me.”

“I’m…” I swallowed from both his nearness and the intensity smoldering in his viridescent irises. “No, Sire. I—”

He grabbed my ponytail—something he insisted I wear—and yanked me to him. “You’re. Defying. Me.”

I trembled at the lethality lurking in his tone. Oh, Goddess. I’d managed to anger him, and on the night of the Regent’s pending visit. What had I been thinking? “I-I’m sorry. I-I, it won’t—”

His lips touched mine gently, silencing me. “Very good, Juliet. You’re learning.”

I blinked. “S-sire?”

He kissed me again, his tongue parting my lips as he pushed me back onto the grass, his body stretching out over mine.
