Chapter Twenty

I lay in the hospital bed, exactly where I didn’t want to be, and waited for them to take me to radiology. Not having anything to do, I closed my eyes to rest but was immediately disrupted by, “What the fuck happened?”

Shay had rushed into the room and was at my bedside before I could process she had said, “fuck.”

As I was about to respond, another voice spoke up. “Oh, Jess. Are you going to be okay?”

I turned to see Jazz standing in the doorway, with tears in her eyes, wrapped in Charley’s arms. Seeing her broke me, and the fear of crying kept me from answering at the moment.

“You look fine. You’re fine, right?” Shay sounded panicked, and I hated that everyone had to see me like this.

Stuffing all the emotions back down, I snorted. “Of course I’m fine. Look at me. Have you seen a better-looking patient? I was just clumsy. I’m so sorry I ruined our date.” Turning my head, I looked at Jazz, who appeared to calm down once I lightened the mood.

She came toward me, standing next to Shay as Charley hung back. When she laced her fingers through mine, those feelings I tried to hide came bubbling to the surface, and I bit my lip to keep them from overflowing.

After letting out a deep exhale, I felt safe to speak again. “You all didn’t need to come down here. I’m sure they will let me out after my CT.”

“Have they diagnosed you with anything yet?” Even with the tears smearing her mascara, Jazz still took my breath away.

“I think the official diagnosis was ‘watch where you’re going, dumbass.’ But I could be wrong.”

“Don’t make light of it. It could be serious.” If Jazz only knew how true that was, but I wasn’t ready to tell her.

However, with her here now, it would be hard to avoid.

“Wow. You got a full room.” The doctor came in, and at least I didn’t have to worry about saying anything just yet. “I’m Dr. King, and I’ll be checking in on you today.” Turning to my friends, she said, “If I could get you all to go to the waiting room, we are going to do a quick scan on this one’s head.” She hitched her thumb in my direction. “Then, after I read the results, depending on what we find, she could be released.”

I hated to see them leave, but it was for the best because they wouldn’t be present when she told me what I already knew. The only problem I had was figuring out a way to tell them a diagnosis without giving them the whole truth. Some might say that was “lying by omission.” But I believed you couldn’t lie without words. That was a secret, and everybody kept them, but it didn’t make them liars.

“Let’s do this thing.” The doctor clapped her hands and was quite chipper for running a test that could have devastating results.

A nurse came in with a wheelchair, and I rolled my eyes because they were treating me as if I were incapable of functioning on my own.
