Angela didn’t think she would be able to sleep. Her whole body was too alert, tingling like she’d had a minor electrical shock, her nerves prickling with static. Her head was even worse. So many images and thoughts crisscrossed each other it was hard to keep track of exactly what she was trying to focus on at each moment. She knew what she wanted to think about, but there were too many variables, too many possibilities, too many paths to run down. She had tried to slow down, typing into her laptop each variation of what she believed she had witnessed, where to start, how to end, who to tell, but after just a few minutes all her brain could visualise and focus on was the semi-transparent figure she had seen in the basement, the way it swirled and shimmered, one second almost within touching distance, the next backing off as though she was the ethereal intruder and it couldn’t decide how to proceed.

What she had seen earlier surpassed everything she had felt before surrounding her grandmother’s death. It wasn’t just a playful or curious spirit sadly waving goodbye for the last time. It was the cruel and vengeful spirit of someone who had forced a number of parents to kill their children with absolutely no remorse whatsoever. A phantom serial killer. There was no possibility of feeling any empathy for this spirit. She could not think of a single reason to justify doing what it did. Whoever this had been when alive may have suffered the most terrible of tragedies, but that gave it no right to seek revenge by causing the deaths of innocents.

And then there were the signs it had left that also kept muddling with her thoughts; the police siren, the knife dripping blood that had spelt something like NIKES onto the wall. If the ghost was seeking revenge for something that had happened to it, the brand name of the trainers must play an important part in deciphering the mystery. But this has been going on for over thirty years. Had Nike even started fabricating footwear that long ago? The only thing she could think of was to go through old files and see if there were any suspects bearing anything related to that manufacturer.

She decided that tomorrow at work she was going to confront Doug, tell him everything she knew and use the photo on her phone as confirmation. See what the ignorant fool had to say then. It was while imagining his reaction that she began to smile and was soon asleep. But her dreams were far from restful.

She found herself in the garden of 11 Parkland Drive. Why she was here she didn’t know yet felt compelled to be present; something was tugging at her conscience and all she knew was that she couldn’t leave. Snakes ran amok in the overgrown grass and weeds, hissing at her as they brushed past. Spiders the size of her hand scurried up the crumbling brickwork.
