Chapter 13
Olivia groped through her suitcase. She had been off ever since her morning with Sloane. Last night had been amazing. The two of them had connected on a near cellular level. Or she had thought so, until that morning. This morning it had seemed as though Sloane couldn't get rid of her fast enough. Jules sat on the bed studying her.
"How did last night go?" Jules asked.
"Great. Fine."
"Oh, obviously, that's why you've unpacked and repacked your suitcase eight times since getting back. Talk to me, sis." Jules patted the spot beside her on the bed. Liv groaned but dutifully sat beside her sister.
"I don't know why I'm upset. It just felt like Sloane didn't want me hanging around this morning."
"Was she rude or dismissive with you?"
"No, nothing like that. She just seemed dodgy."
"Well, how did last night go?"
"That's what I'm having a hard time understanding. Last night was amazing. Like seriously, one of the best dates I've ever had."
"Maybe she was just unsure about how you were feeling. She didn't want to make you feel obligated or pressured in any sort of way."
"Maybe. I shouldn't be so upset. I knew this might only be a one-night thing going in. It's just I think I might actually like her, and last night it seemed like she felt the same way."
"Oh, sis, I'm sorry. Try not to..." A knock on the door interrupted her sister mid-thought. Jules rose and pulled her robe in tight around her as she opened the door. Sloane stood in the hallway, flowers in hand and a sheepish smile on her face. Jules looked as though she might be about to pounce so Liv walked over quickly.
"Why don't we talk out here?" Liv said, pushing Sloane back into the hallway. She looked at the flowers and managed a weak smile.
"I wasn't expecting you," Liv said plainly. It occurred to her that there was a deepness to those words beyond the surface. Sloane handed Liv the flowers, they were beautiful.
"So, why did you come?" Liv asked, arching an eyebrow. Sloane heaved a sigh resting against the wall.
"Last night was amazing. Honestly, so much more than I could have even expected. But this morning I was afraid."
"Afraid?" Liv said, her face visibly softening.
"Yes, afraid. Because I like you a lot. But I know you're leaving soon. I was afraid I would develop these strong feelings only to have to say goodbye in two weeks." Liv reached out, touching Sloane's arm.
"It's true I can't make you any promises. Especially not after one night. I like you too, and I want to get to know you. Maybe that doesn't make sense. But it's true, I just want to get to know you. I can't explain why exactly." Liv sent Sloane a grin. She leaned against the wall and let herself slide down to the floor. Sloane joined her on the floor and rested her head against the wall.
"Hmmm, seems like the two of us might have stumbled into a situation."
"It appears that way.
