Chase had missed the buzz of the tap room the past few weeks. They kept him on call and he liked that. His limo service was in high season now with proms, graduations, and weddings. There wasn’t much time to consider working a night at the tap house.

Tammi had heard there was a pizza truck there that night, and she had a hankering for pizza before she headed off to work the night shift at the hospital. Chase figured it sounded good enough. This was a rare night where he wasn’t working. Tammi had been making vacation plans for Vegas, and he was still not sure he wanted to go.

Joel was behind the bar, and instead of greeting them with just a hello he came around the bar and hugged them. “Sight for sore eyes,” he said laughing. “Soccer mom association is having a fundraiser. They’re louder than college girls.”

“Need help tonight?”

“You free?”

“I am.”

“I’ll let you know. You here for pizza?”

Tammi nodded. “I’ve heard good things about this truck.”

Joel nodded. “It’s one of our favorites. You guys get some pizza, I’ll pull you some beers. I have a new one on tap. IPA.”

Chase nodded. “Sounds good.”

“Just one of those lemonades for me. I have to go to work.”

Joel nodded, pouring Chase a beer and opening a bottle of lemonade for Tammi.

They ordered their food and took it to the bar to enjoy their beers and keep Joel company. After an hour, Tammi kissed him goodbye and headed to work.

“Things are going good with you guys?” Joel asked as he washed the glasses behind the bar.

“I suppose.”

Joel chuckled. “You don’t sound sold on that.”

“I’m not a relationship guy. Never have been. I like my freedom. I like a change of scenery, if you know what I mean. I’m freaking stuck on what happened between me and Hillary, and I can’t get her out of my mind. All the while, I have Tammi planning trips to Vegas.”

“Vegas is fun.”

“Right. I’ve had plenty of fun there. But when she talks about it, she adds in the story of a friend who hooked up with a childhood friend and they ran off and got married. We’re two months in, and is that what she’s thinking? Does she think I’ll get to Vegas and want to get married?”

“That’s deep.”

“Deep end deep. I have some unresolved issues I need to figure out. I need to get Hillary and your wedding night out of my system before I can commit to anyone else.”

The chair on the other side of him moved and he watched as his pregnant sister climbed up into it, her eyes narrowed on him and her lips pursed.

“Hillary and my wedding night? What in the hell does that mean?”
