These references indicate that the demand of horses among the Indian rulers was large, that most of these demands were met by importing horses and that it were mostly the foreigners, some of whom had settled on the borderlands of India, who facilitated these imports. In this context the observations made by Pierre Ponafidine are worth quoting:

The demand for horses turned out to be the driving force in the world economy from the early years of first millennium ce, right up to the commencement of First World War. . . . The economic and political dynamics of this exchange was dictated on the one hand by the abundant availability of good horses in the drier climates of central Asia, the Russian steppes, Iran, Arabian Peninsula and the borderlands of Turkey with a matching scarcity at least of the better breeds, in the tropical south, south- east Asia and China, on the other.138
