KILLEN DISPATCHED DETECTIVE–LIEUTENANT JOHN DUNN TO Rumford, Rhode Island, to interrogate Richards—and later came to regret that he did. Dunn was a thorn in Killen’s side. A former Boston motorcycle traffic cop employed by the fire marshall’s office in Springfield after joining the state police, Dunn had invoked seniority to win assignment to Killen’s office. Killen tried to block Dunn’s assignment because he wanted Bernie Flynn and not an inexperienced investigator working for him, but a state police review board backed Dunn. Killen had to pull Dunn off the Costa murder case when, in his judgment, Dunn botched the initial investigation. Killen referred to him as “that dopey son of a bitch.” Nevertheless, Dunn was in his office to stay. If anybody was going to have to go, it was going to be Flynn.
