Mark finished shaving and got dressed, hearing Leigh Ann’s voice in his head. “Mark, go with the blue tie. Blue is a power color.”

That woman he’d married could drive him up the wall with all her opinions and advice. Yes, she was often right. But he also knew her incessant need to have everything in life in its proper place was nothing more than insecurity. He’d learned that yet again last summer, when she thought he was having an affair with Andrea DuPont, his business partner.

He hated the place they were in right now, and it was all his fault. He’d seriously miscalculated a business opportunity and now he was the pariah of Sun Valley. No one would take his calls. No one would wave on the street, or even talk to him, for that matter. It was hard not to lose hope, to not believe he was finished in this town.

Which is why when he got the call from Reeve Rusk inviting him to meet him for lunch, he’d jumped at the idea. Mark had long been an admirer of the business mogul, a man who had built a multi-billion-dollar enterprise from the ground up. The idea of meeting with such a man in person had him fussing like Lewinsky in front of Clinton. And you’d better believe, he was ready to go nearly as far to get in bed with this guy.

He grabbed the blue tie and secured it perfectly in place.

This meeting could be the chance of a lifetime—and the single thing that could turn everything around.

Mark pulled into a parking spot on the street in front of the Pioneer Saloon, rethinking his decision not to tell Leigh Ann about this meeting. Secrets were never a good idea, but he didn’t want to get his wife’s hopes up unnecessarily. If things progressed today, he’d take her someplace special and break the news. They hadn’t been out in weeks.

He was a bit surprised at the choice of restaurants suggested by this Rusk guy. No doubt the food was delicious, but unlike the many al fresco dining options people often frequented in the summer, the Pioneer was dark with tables nestled in out-of-the-way spots, some as far back as the kitchen.

Mark took a deep breath, placed his hand on the metal pull and yanked the heavy door open. It took several seconds for his eyes to adjust to the lack of light.

“Mark, there you are!”

Mark turned to the man who had extended his arm. He swallowed his sudden nerves and pasted a smile. “Mr. Rusk. So nice to finally meet in person.”

“Call me Reeve.” He placed his hand on Mark’s back. “I hope you don’t mind. I’ve already got us a table.”

Mark followed him to the rear of the restaurant, to a large wooden table located near the stairs leading to the basement level and directly underneath a massive taxidermied moose head.

“Mark, I hope you don’t mind. I’ve invited others to join us.” He pointed to the men already at the table.
