As promised, my knights in shining armour arrived in just under thirty minutes. I locked up my car and climbed into Tucker’s.

“Thank you so much again, Tucker. I really appreciate your help.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” he said sincerely. “It’s my pleasure.”

“Yeah! I man always helps a woman in need,” I heard someone call from the backseat in a false, deep, superhero voice.

I turned in my seat to acknowledge Bryson. “Well, I must be the luckiest girl in the world to have not one, but two handsome men to help me out.” I’d realized I’d called Tucker handsome after the words came out of my mouth. At first I wanted to suck them back in like a vacuum cleaner, but when I glanced at Tucker to catch his reaction he was side-eyeing me with a smirk that I could barely see through his beard, but it was there nonetheless. He’d caught it too.

I sat back nervously in my seat, trying not to say anything else that might make this car ride any more awkward.

“So, how was it Bryson? Did you have fun?”

Bryson’s expression lit up and his hands started moving simultaneously with his story. “Oh my gosh, Mom. It was crazy. I got to go onto the field, in the actual stadium . And all the players were there. And Tucker helped me with my swing…” Bryson continued to ramble on at rapid rates and for the briefest of moments my attention was drawn from him and back to Tucker. His phone lit up, the name Estella flashing across the screen, and he glanced at it briefly before declining the call and putting it back. “... and Tucker said he’s coming to my game on Friday to watch me play. Right, Tucker?”

Who is Estella?

“Huh? Ohh… yeah, right. Of course, sport. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I told you that.” He glanced at Bryson in his rearview mirror and then to me.

Bryson grew quiet a full ten minutes prior to our arriving home. I wanted to wake him up, but Tucker insisted he’d carry him inside. What I would have struggled to do on my own, Tucker did without difficulty. He lifted Bryson out of the backseat and propped him on his shoulder, moving effortlessly toward the apartment and up the stairs. Oh my. I bit down on my lip and tried not to act impressed, but I was impressed. Very impressed.

“Thank you so much again, Tucker… for everything. I could tell today really meant a lot to Bryson.” I stated softly as to not wake Bryson who was still asleep in Tucker’s arms.

“Well, like I’d said before, Quinn. It was my pleasure.”

I smiled back at him then turned to open the front door. That’s when I noticed it. The door was cracked open. The wood on the frame was split. Someone had broken in. Before I could formulate a full thought, blurred figures rushed out of my apartment. The first one threw a large duffle bag packed with stuff over her shoulder and blew past me.
