The conversation could have gone much worse. Drew’s original plan to tell Sky after they were airborne had suddenly felt too sneaky. While she sometimes did some backhanded moves at work, that wasn’t how she wanted to be in her personal life, and this thing with Sky felt personal. Though the lines were admittedly blurred. An audible click was followed by Gary’s voice.

“Arriving in ten minutes.”

Drew gave him a thumbs up and checked around the seat to make sure she hadn’t left anything and slid her phone into the side pocket of her backpack. Sky was doing the same thing, though her backpack was smaller. She took two bottles of water out of the small refrigerator and handed one to Sky. “It might be a bit before we get through security. If we don’t drink it all, they’ll take it, but we can get more.”

Gary pulled to the curb in front of their airline and got out, releasing the trunk before he did. Sky exited her side, and they both met Gary to gather their bags. Sky’s suitcase was smaller than her own and made her wonder if she’d overpacked. The idea that she had brought an abundance of clothes she’d never wear crossed her mind. It was too late to worry about that now. She pulled the two twenties she’d tucked in her back pocket and placed them in Gary’s palm. “Thanks for a great ride, Gary. I’ll be sure to put in a good word for you.”

“Appreciate it.” He nodded to Sky. “Have a great vacation.”

“Thanks, Gary.” Sky smiled sweetly.

Drew hefted her backpack and grabbed her suitcase handle, then reached for Sky’s.

“I’ve got it,” Sky said.

She hesitated for a moment, her upbringing nudging her to insist. “Okay. Let’s do this.” Drew went to the VIP line of their carrier, dug through the outer zippered section of her pack, and handed several pages off to Sky. It didn’t take long once they got to the counter and she tucked her boarding pass and ID into her back pocket, then followed the signs and moved to the back of the security line that snaked back and forth several times. She drank half her bottle of water, her mouth dry from the recycled airport air and the excitement that had snuck up on her.

“We could be here a while,” Drew said, watching the slow progress of the other passengers to the security booths.

Sky capped her bottle and nodded. “You don’t think we’ll miss our flight, do you?” Sky appeared calm, but the wrinkle between her eyebrows showed otherwise.

Drew glanced at her watch. There was a little more than two hours until their flight, ninety minutes until boarding started. “We should be fine. If it’s close, I’ll call the gate agent and ask them to hold the flight.” She had stored all the numbers she could need in her phone, all under the header of Fiji for Two. Sky stared at her.

“You can do that?”

One of the perks of being a travel agent was being in the know about how the airlines operated.
