About ten minutes later, Zara had a half-dozen leads in her notebook, Kenny was headed back to the kitchen, and the rest of them walked back out to the bar. The table they’d been at still had the Reserved placard on it, and Elise’s rose was waiting for her. They all congregated around the table.

“What did you think?” Tom asked Dylan and Elise.

“It was interesting, but I don’t know how you’re going to track those people down,” Dylan said. “He couldn’t remember half of their names.”

It was true—Zara’s notebook was full of things like blonde server at Appleby’s on Exchange St., maybe Sarah, Vogt slapped her ass and she slapped his face, got fired. It seemed that the majority of people who had an ax to grind with him were women he’d treated inappropriately, along with the friends and boyfriends who took offense.

“We have our ways,” Zara said, flagging down the bartender for a fresh round of beers. She asked for one for each of them because Kenny Norton had been their last stop of the night and she and Tom were officially off-duty now. “We’ll track them down.”

Tom took a long pull on his beer when it arrived, then said, “You wanna tell them about the cancer treatment centers?”

“Sure,” Zara said. “As long as we’re still not intruding?”

Dylan looked to Elise, who said, “We don’t mind a little company. You did buy us a round after all.”

Zara told them that just before they came to the bar, they were at the radiation therapy department at Fox Hospital. She and Tom had trekked to five different cancer treatment centers around the city, showing the staff a pre-mortem picture of Wesley Vogt, before they finally found someone who recognized him at Fox County Hospital. And, just like they suspected, he’d been using a false identity.

“They know him there as William Smith,” Zara said. “Super original fake name, right? The strange part is that he was very open about his past meth addiction—just not his name.”

“He also only told them that he was a former user,” Tom said. “Not that he was a cook.”

“Apparently he only ever made it to one treatment session,” Zara continued. “The technician I spoke to said that the whole staff was pretty skeptical about him actually completing radiation because the number of former meth addicts who relapse is so high.”

“None of the employees was surprised that he was dead,” Tom added. “But they were surprised that it wasn’t drug-related.”

“I guess if you spend your life being shitty to people, you can’t expect to get away with it forever,” Zara said. “Somebody got their payback—we just have to figure out who.”

Tom drained his beer, then stepped away from the table. “All right, well, I’ve imposed on someone else’s date for long enough tonight.”

“Yeah, Kelsey’s at home waiting for me,” Zara said. “We’re making dinner together.”

“That’s sweet,” Dylan said, and Elise filed it away for future reference—and a future date night idea, perhaps.

“What are you doing tonight, Tom?” Elise asked.
