EIGHTEEN

“Shit!” Bree jumps up when the sound of crashing can be heard from above us. I’m quick to run after her as she rushes up two flights of stairs. It’s when I reach the second level that I discover just how unfit I am and seriously consider Hope’s invitation to join her class.

I follow Bree right into an open office. I look to the side to see Dominic being held against the wall by two men, one I know is his uncle but I can’t see the other’s face. Dominic’s eyes widen when he sees me. There’s a wildness in his features I’ve never seen on anyone else before. It’s not frightening—though I am afraid. But it’s for his well-being and not mine.

What the hell happened?

“Really, did you all expect any other kind of reaction?” Bree says with her hands on her hips and a scowl painted across her face.

Dominic’s eyes flicker to the opposite side of the room before they return to me. I crane my neck to see what he’s looking at, my eyes landing on a series of photos taped to the wall.

“No! Get the fuck off me.” His roar has my head snapping back in his direction. He pushes the two men off him with an ease that shouldn’t exist, considering how big they are. When Dominic reaches me, he takes hold of my hand and pulls me out of the room.

“Dom, wait,” a voice calls from behind us but he doesn’t stop moving.

I have to practically jog to keep up with him. “Dominic, slow down. I can’t walk that fast.” I tug on his hand.

He pauses to turn around. Before I know what’s happening, I’m hanging upside down over his shoulder and he’s back to practically sprinting out of the building.

“Shit. Put me down! What the hell?” I scream while pounding my fists on the solid muscles in his back. My attempts to stop him don’t seem to deter him in the least. Dominic pauses again, and then I’m being dumped into the seat of his car. “What are you doing?” I ask when he reaches in, tugs the belt over my chest, and clicks the buckle in place.

Again he doesn’t answer me. Instead, he slams the door shut before running around the front of the car. Within seconds, he’s peeling away from the kerb and weaving in and out of the city traffic. The sound of horns and people shouting surround us.

“Stop! What the hell is going on?” I ask him for a third time.

“I… can’t. I can’t,” he repeats himself while shaking his head no. His hands are strangling the steering wheel, his knuckles white and his jaw clenched so tight I’m afraid he’s going to break his own teeth.

“You can’t what?”

The look in his eyes when he glances over at me breaks my heart, and I don’t know why. I don’t have feelings for this guy. Sure, I like him enough to spend a day with him. I obviously did have feelings for him at one point, and I really wish I could remember them.
