On a level field behind the fort, Henry Blake was preparing a horsemanship training course when he noticed a soldier riding to the fort from the east at a full gallop. Mounting his own horse, Henry rode around the fort, through the gate, and reined up in front of headquarters. The weary soldier was talking with Stafford, who interrupted and pointed to Henry. "Give your report to the major."

The man saluted and started talking breathlessly. He had been in a patrol led by Lieutenant Medford, which had happened upon an isolated ranch raided by the renegades no more than an hour before. A herd had been stolen, and a dozen Pima were driving it toward Mexico, while the remainder rode on in search of more loot. Medford and his patrol had gone to recover the cattle, while this messenger galloped back to Fort Peck with his report.

"No one at the ranch was hurt?" Henry asked.

"No, sir. The house is like a fort, and everyone ran inside when the renegades showed up. They're mad about
