Chapter Twenty

Casey had talked to the Sheriff and arranged to take two weeks off. And as promised he had donned a bullet-proof vest before he left on patrol. He’d called Jake twice and Bo twice. And he had just brought in a man he’d arrested for DUI. He started out of town but decided he’d stop and get a bottle of water before he got too far out.

He pulled into a convenience store parking lot then hesitated, remembering that he’d promised Bo he wouldn’t go in one today. He shook his head and reached for the door handle just as he glanced up at the store and froze. Jesus Christ. You’ve gotta be kidding me.

He grabbed the mike on his shoulder and called his dispatch. “Notify Elko P.D. that they’ve got a robbery in progress.” He gave them the address then slowly eased out of the car and walked around to the side away from the front door of the store. He drew his pistol and braced himself across the hood of the car with it trained on the front door then waited.

He heard the sirens as they grew closer and heard the squeal of the tires of more than one car as they made the turn into the parking lot just as the front door opened and the man came out with the gun still in his hand. Casey saw him look at the patrol cars pulling into the lot and watched as the man raised his gun and fired a quick shot at the first car.

He shouted at the man to distract him. When he turned his head and saw Casey, he shifted his aim until it was pointed directly at Casey. He shouted twice for him to drop the gun. And when he didn’t, Casey fired the shot. Only when the Elko officers reached the man and determined that he was dead, did Casey finally relax his grip on the gun and lay it on the hood of the car and dropped his head into his hands.

Bo and Jake had stayed right together all morning. They both walked in the back door and got a cup of coffee. And they both shook their heads when they found Brinley in her ‘black hole’ with the radio on, something that she wouldn’t even hear. Jake nodded to the front porch and they started that way.

‘This just in. Police are still on the scene of an attempted robbery at a local convenience store on the west side of town. At least one officer has been shot. His condition is not known at this time. According to reports, both the Elko P.D. and Elko County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the resultant shoot-out. We’ll let you know more when we get more details.’

Bo’s cup shattered when it hit the floor and he went to his knees. “No, no, no,” he moaned.

Brinley jumped when she heard the cup shatter and jumped up from the chair, not knowing what had happened.

“Jake?”

“Help
