Along with the Feeney tapes, I inherited a small collection of photographs, most of which showed Feeney and Jenny in the Whisky a Go Go. From Feeney’s wallpaper suits and curtain ties, I dated the pictures to the mid- to late-1970s. The Feeneys are pictured drinking with men who might be detectives, and others who could be DJs or dockers, and attractive, unplaceable women. Jenny looks radiant and Feeney bearishly endearing, but some of their friends are overly conscious of the camera. I could not identify anyone, so I copied some of the prints and posted them on various Facebook pages moderated by former clubbers and club owners, sharpies and St Kilda historians. I outlined my project and asked for information on the drinkers squeezed around dining tables laid with tablecloths and weighed down with jugs and buckets, bottles and glasses, ashtrays and cigarette packets, and, in one image, programs for a performance by the incomparably named Engelbert Humperdinck.

I met a number of St Kilda identities through social media, but nobody who could name the Feeneys’ friends. Then people started advising me to stop what I was doing.

Because some unsolicited packages turn out to be timebombs.
