Chapter Nine

Carlos woke to a smell so heavenly his mouth began to water in anticipation. Bacon. Was there anything that smelled so good? He pulled on his shorts and headed for the kitchen where he found Clay in his boxer briefs at the stove, moving wooden tongs in a frying pan. Carlos’s heart skipped several beats. His boyfriend was making breakfast for him.

Clay’s broad shoulders and muscled back tapered into a “V” and those sexy dimples above his firm, muscled butt cheeks were evident above the briefs’ waistband. Holy shit, Clay was hot. Carlos liked this look.

Last night, they’d stayed up for a few more hours, talking about what’d happened in the hub, what’d happened on the pier and how that’d brought up shit Carlos didn’t want to revisit. Clay had shared his dream of becoming a detective, and Carlos felt they’d turned an important corner—they were really starting something.

“You going to stand there and stare at my ass all day?” Clay asked, bringing Carlos out of his musings. “I’m not complaining, mind you, but the bacon might burn.”

“Don’t burn the bacon,” Carlos ordered. “Though your ass is spectacular.”

A red flush worked its way up Clay’s throat until it reached his face. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome,” Carlos chuckled. “So, you can cook?”

“Yep.” Clay plucked three eggs from the carton and began juggling them. “Didn’t think a cop could cook?”

“No, it’s not that. I’m happy one of us can,” Carlos replied while watching the sideshow. “Is that a new way of scrambling them that I don’t know about?”

Clay caught all three and laughed. “Smartass. How do you want your eggs prepared?”

“Over easy, please. I’ll get started on the toast. I can help with the anyone-can-do-this basics.”

Carlos joined Clay at the counter, and before he could even reach for the bread, Clay pulled him into his arms. “G’morning.”

“’Morning.” Carlos lowered his head, seeking a kiss, which his boyfriend quickly gave. “I thought bacon was the best way to start the day, but I was wrong. Your kiss is.”

Clay’s smile was brilliant. “I vote we try again to make sure.” Which they did spectacularly.

After his head stopped spinning, Carlos placed two pieces of bread into the toaster and took out the butter while Clay fried six eggs. It all felt so wonderfully domestic as they worked together until they had two heaping plates sitting on the island’s countertop.

Carlos refilled each of their coffee cups before they dug into their morning feast. Carlos could get used to help with food prep as long as Clay was the chef. Not much was said while they ate, neither leaving a crumb over.

“That was delicious.” Carlos wiped his mouth, leaned over and gave Clay a quick kiss. “Thanks.”

Clay laid his arm along the back of Carlos’s chair and said, “You’re welcome.”

“How was sleeping on the couch?” Carlos had wanted Clay to stay with him in his bed, but he hadn’t worked up the nerve to ask. “Not too bad, I hope.”

“Not at all. You have a comfortable couch. I slept like a log.
