Chapter 19

Wow.

That is truly all I can say. I went back to my place, poured myself a drink, shot that, and poured another before I sat down. I took a minute to think about how far I’d come in the past couple of years. I had started out by slinging chicken in a small Alabama town, and look at me now.

Shit’s crazy, right?

But there I was.

Freeman was dead, and Jamarco was gone. There was no telling if I would ever see him again. I took a big swallow, drained the glass, and poured another drink. I needed some air, so I went out on the balcony and sat down.

Freeman and I had been trying to build something, and now all those plans we’d made, all the things we’d talked about that we were gonna do, all of that had fallen on me now. I took a sip and wondered if I was up to it.

Didn’t matter.

We were moving forward, and I was on top.

Over the next couple of months, I depended heavily on Drac, Morgan, and Dominique. Kendra was still around; she had gone straight stickup girl. If she knew you had dope or money and you were walking the street with it, you became her prey. I gotta tell you, seriously, the girl got heart.

I spent a lot of time with Blaire. Blaire’s Cosmetics had taken off and was growing, and we were wisely reinvesting our profits in research and development. Shep had become our lawyer—we’d put him on retainer about seven or eight months ago—and so far, it had turned out to be a good move for Blaire and me. We hadn’t had sex again. It was something neither of us talked about. I went back and forth in my mind about that. But I always ended up thinking that this arrangement was for the best.

“You need to think about making some other investments, other than the cosmetics company,” Shep mused one day, as we all sat in a meeting room at Blaire’s Cosmetics. “You too, Blaire.”

“In what?” I asked.

“Real estate,” Shep answered.

Blaire and I looked at each other and giggled like schoolgirls.

“Real estate. No, I can’t say that I have even given real estate investing any thought,” I said.

“Neither have I, I am ashamed to say,” Blaire said.

“Well, you need to,” Shep told us. “Mark Twain said, ‘Buy land. They ain’t making no more of it.’”

“Well, if Mark Twain thought it was a good idea . . . ,” Blaire said sarcastically and laughed.

I gave a chuckle. “Fuck him! What you say, Shep?”

“That the current market in Atlanta is ripe with commercial real estate.”

I grinned. “I’m in. What about you, Blaire?”

“I would need to get more information, but count me in, partner,” Blaire said.

“I’ll set something up with a Realtor I can trust for her discretion,” Shep said and began gathering his things. “I’ll be in touch with anything new. Otherwise, I will see you at our next meeting,” he announced as he closed his briefcase.

“Sounds good,” Blaire said.
