Matteo could hear Jenda’s screams and thoughts as he reached the upper hall. His name repeated in her head with pleas for him to come. Flashes of Jonathan shot through his mind. The bastard was hurting her, threatening her, ripping her clothes. Fury and a protective rage churned inside his gut and a growl burst from his lips as her thoughts went silent.

As he burst through the door, shattering the ancient wood to splinters, his vision clouded with a crimson haze of hatred. To anyone else, it would have looked like two teenage kids caught up in a passionate swoon, but Matteo had heard Jenda’s thoughts, and he knew Jonathan for what he was.

The younger vampire raised his bloody mouth from Jenda’s neck and hissed. Eyes holding Matteo’s in a challenge, he let her limp body drop to the floor. The deafening thud of dead weight connecting with hardwood echoed through the room as he lunged forward and spat blood in Matteo’s face.

“Mine.”

Matteo’s eyes glowed like fiery embers in their sockets, and his rage leant a dangerous spike to his normally even voice. “I told you, what would happen if you harmed her.”

“Bite me.” Laughing, the boy turned and kicked Jenda with a sickening thud.

The smell of Jenda’s blood filled the air with a sweetness that seemed out of place amongst the stench of fear and hunger. Combined with jealous rage and the need to defend what was his, the scent drove him forward.

In seconds, his hand wrapped around Jonathan’s throat, feeling the bones snapping under his grip as he raised the boy off the ground. Fangs bared, he ripped open the fledgling’s throat in one quick lash, and blood spilled out in a crimson fountain as Matteo let him drop to the ground.

Jonathan’s screams were cut short by the wound, and a sick gurgling followed as he tried to cover the gaping hole. Caught in the slickness of blood on marble, his legs and hands flailed in an attempt to scramble away.

Matteo stepped forward, pulling a silver dagger from his belt. “You worthless bastard. How dare you touch her? How dare you drink from her. That human girl has been chosen by your maker, and she has been chosen by me. She is Belle’s, and she is mine
