Service entrance, The Grand Hotel von Hoffenheim
Accessing the grounds of the Grand Hotel was light work for someone like Gaspar. It was no secret to Hilderberg security that no matter how much members of staff were paid they remained Hilderberg’s biggest vulnerability.
What Gaspar had done to Joachim had been speculated about in the past, specifically by Ulrich Schöll. But with over one hundred members of staff in dozens of properties across multiple countries, it was always likely someone would slip through.
The worst case scenario had always been thought of in terms of a journalist sneaking in and getting photos, or possibly video footage of Hilderberg members. That alone wouldn’t be fatal. It could also be dismissed as a random one-off.
Gaspar was about to radically redefine their worst case scenario.
The photo in Joachim’s ID was easily replaced for one of Gaspar. So when the guards swiped the card through a scanner at the roadblock, it confirmed his authority to be on site for the next twelve hours.
With the floor-by-floor map of the hotel on his phone, Gaspar made his way quickly to the back staircase reserved for workers. His cardio work was in top condition, and he easily bounded up to the fourth floor wearing Joachim’s bellhop uniform, carrying the large black holdall and Hugo Boss suit bag.
A room service attendant on his way down passed Gaspar on the third floor.
Gaspar had hoped not to run into anyone. That was why he’d figured out a way on the drive over to combine an excuse with a little information gathering.
‘Hey, man,’ Gaspar said in German. ‘You don’t happen to know if Senator Adams is on the fourth floor, do you? He left his bag in the bar.’ Draping the suit bag over his arm, he acted like he had a scratch just below his left collarbone. Conveniently covering Joachim’s name badge.
‘There’s no one on the fourth floor,’ the attendant replied. ‘They’re only as high as the third this weekend.’
Gaspar nodded like it was all coming back to him. ‘That’s what I thought. Cheers.’
With so many members of staff in such a big hotel, Gaspar was right that one new face wouldn’t arouse much suspicion. Stopping to talk to a member of staff was still a risky move, but it was worth it to know that no one else should have been on the fourth floor. Now if Gaspar heard a noise in the middle of the night, he would know he had to take evasive action.
Gaspar didn’t have a key card – for any room – but that wasn’t an issue. He stopped at a room that was close enough to the elevator and the staircase to hear anyone coming, but also far enough away to give him time to respond.
The Grand Hotel von Hoffenheim was not alone in using the same manufacturer for their door key cards as most other luxury hotel chains. And there was a very simple exploit in their system.
Underneath the slot where a guest slid their card,
