Chapter 12

“I’m sorry, mate, but they aren’t here,” Dixon insists. “We must evacuate. This place is about to go up.”

“You go. I’ll be right behind you. They’ve got to be here,” I reply, desperately.

“We’re out of time. Come on, Captain, think of your little girl,” Dixon shouts, turning as the floor trembles again.

I am forced to concede that my comrade is right. It is time to evacuate. The bombing is some distance away now but that will change rapidly. We may already have left it too late to reach a safe distance. Reluctantly, I turn to follow Dixon, my emotions in turmoil.

“Dad!” a voice suddenly sounds from behind me. I turn back in disbelief and see Josh running towards me, Alice next to him.

“Josh!” I shout in reply. “The bombers are closing in. We’ve got to get out of here.”

“This way, follow us!” Alice insists, as she draws level with Dixon and I, but then turns as if to go back the way she came.

“What do you mean, ‘follow you? We haven’t got time to fuck about. We’re going!” Dixon barks.

“It’s too late to leave, Sergeant. The bombs are already dropping. We need to get underground. Trust us, please!” Alice pleads.

Dixon glares at me, blaming me for our peril but also leaving it to me to make the decision.

“Alice is right. It’s too far to evacuate. We’ve only minutes before those bombers are overhead. We have to trust her,” I tell Dixon, who looks back at me in surrender.

“Simms,” Dixon bellows towards the stairwell. “Front and centre. Get your arse down here.”

Simms rushes out of the stairwell, almost falling over himself. His look of terror is obvious as he runs towards us.

“What the hell! The bombing has started, in case you hadn’t noticed. We’ve got to get out of here!” Simms demands as he arrives.

“Change of plan, sonny,” Dixon tells Simms, as Alice and Josh take off back the way they came.

“Sergeant!” Simms protests urgently, but he follows reluctantly as Dixon and I move to follow Josh and Alice.

Following my son and Alice is a leap of faith for me but I trust Josh implicitly. Dixon and Simms hardly know him. God knows what they must be thinking as we follow them, moving deeper into the stadium. They are putting their lives in the hands of these two relative youngsters.

Josh and Alice tear into the stadium, following it as it curves round. I can barely see what’s ahead of me in the darkness and wonder how they can see where they are going. Then I see a light shining ahead, directing them. The light gets brighter as we draw closer. Two silhouettes move behind it.

“Come on,” an unfamiliar voice shouts from behind the light, the floor beneath our feet constantly rumbling.

“Go, go,” Alice’s voice urgently shouts in reply.

The beam of light sweeps right and then disappears. We rush to follow the glow that remains, turning into the stairwell, which only has one flight of stairs going down. I am the last through, just as the entire building shakes violently as sonic booms hit the outside walls.
