Eleven â Nobody Is Going To Leave!
Having gone only a short distance into the woodland, the man who had fled from the Singer Junior car stopped as soon as the spotlight was swung away and looked around. Although the thick hedge through which he had passed combined with the trees and bushes to prevent him seeing the road, he could hear enough to suspect his companion would soon be overpowered. The supposition was quickly verified by the command to stop the attack, and the next words warned him that some of the party from the limousine were being sent in search of him. However, despite the order he had been given to make sure he escaped, his next actions were not those that anybody who had heard his promise to do so would have expected.
Instead of moving deeper into the woodland, the passenger retraced his steps silently until he was able to look through the gate from behind the massive trunk of an old oak tree. Distressed by the sight of his companion lying motionless between the cars, he hoped his reminder to take âitâ in time had been acted upon. However, he was relieved by the suggestion that they were suspected of being tramps who had stolen the Singer, and also relieved on hearing the man who was clearly in charge refuse the request for flashlights to be used in hunting for him. Furthermore, learning how his companion was to be treated, he took added comfort from the realization thatâbeing certain his advice about âitâ had been heededâthe interrogation would not be happening until much later that morning, by which time he hoped help would be available to effect a rescue.
Despite the summations he had reached, the passenger did not move off immediately. Flattening out on the ground behind the oak, he watched three of the men climbing the gate. Once over, acting as he had expected they would, they advanced through the undergrowth in the direction he had been taking when the spotlightâs beam was diverted. From the noise they were making and the profanity which came to his ears, he concluded they were unused to moving through such terrain in the night and did not care for the task. The assumption was correct. After about five minutes, they returned to the gate and, discovering the remainder of the party had left the scene, climbed over it to follow.
Satisfied that he had evaded the pursuit, the passenger gave thought as to how he could summon assistance for his companion. Feeling sure a watch was being kept on the road, he ruled it out as a possible means of achieving his ends by going along it to the police station in the village of Little Mansfield. However, before coming to the area, he had familiarized himself with its geography. Although there were a couple of small farmhouses nearby, he considered he would find the residence of Colonel Sir Thorley Besgrove-Woodstole better suited for his needs. Having drawn this conclusion, after he had paused for a moment to get his bearings, he set off through the woods.
