The rest of the day was spent either sitting in the truck and watching, or taking a casual stroll with the boys. Each time Candie left the house on foot, I followed along with Jasper and Street-Fighter. We had set up a text alert system during our dinner meeting the night before which would allow us a means of communications, and for Candie to use to let me know if she was leaving the house, or if she were to receive some form of contact from her stalker.

She had only left the house twice during the day. Once to go to a neighborhood market and the other, to a meeting with her tax accountant. Both trips were incident free, and I had never spotted anybody who appeared to take any interest in her what so ever.

I had used most of the stakeout time to continue my research into Candie. Her talk of spending time in Syria and Iraq had piqued my interest, and spent my time reading whatever I could find online about her. I had installed an adjustable platform onto the floor of my truck, which I designed to hold an 11.6” laptop, and had a panel built into it for the laptop to plug into for purposes of power, and to hook into the secure wifi hotspot I had installed in the truck.

What I found fascinated me. Candie’s first trip to Damascus had been as a chaperone/instructor for a group of third year college students at Colgate. The group had been all females, and four days into the seven day trip, two of the girls had disappeared from the group. All attempts to locate them, by the State Department, the College, and the Military had been to no avail. The two girls were best of friends, roommates, and had been sharing a room during the trip. The girls had been in an open-air bazaar along with Candie, when they had become separated during an intense argument between a customer and a vendor. It was widely assumed that the two girls had been targets of opportunity, and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I found three other times when Candie had been in either Iraq or Syria the last two years as part of a study group working on bridging the gap between women’s rights, which existed between the area’s diverse and often contemptuous religious organizations. Nothing was ever mentioned, in anything I read about the groups she was with, having a member going missing again, but something just didn’t feel right to me.

I was about to do a little crosschecking, when my phone emitted a tone for a text massage. I knew the text was from Candie. I tapped the screen to open the message and quietly laughed as I read it. “Nothing new here, anything there? I’m being a good girl and staying in tonight… Well, maybe not a good girl, but I am staying in, just me, a bottle of wine, and dreams of…u.
