Gabrielle Roy in Paris.

“…the incredible happened: not only did my novel make the short list, but on December 1, 1947, it won the Prix Femina, sparking a furor in France – and an even greater one in Canada.” (p. 55)

1 . Ricard, François. Gabrielle Roy: A Life, translated by Patricia Claxton (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1999), 600 pages. Originally published in French in 1996 by Boréal, Montreal.

2 . Stephen’s last name is unknown. The young Ukrainian-Canadian acted as an anti-Soviet spy and may even have been in contact with the Nazis, which explains why his identity was kept secret. Gabrielle refers to him several times in Enchantment and Sorrow.

3 . The English translation by Harry L. Binsse, Where Nests the Water Hen, appeared in 1951. Gabrielle described her illumination in the book’s preface, which was reprinted in 1982 in The Fragile Lights of Earth (“Memory and Creation,” pp. 188–189).
