Personality defect, I expect.
I think you will in time. (Strod)
Yes. I think so too. (Rosa)
Accidia wrote the following article when she was expecting for the sixth time. As mentioned in a previous chapter, at the end of her entry ‘Longing for Lucilla’, Accidia miscarried shortly afterwards.

Perhaps it would be well to end with a thought for the day about John and his part (not biological, of course) in this affair. John has the great disadvantage and the great advantage of naturally taking many things for granted. This means that he never fusses over me, never gives me presents, never remembers my birth day, assumes that I am happy, contented and well unless I positively scream at him that the contrary is true. (His excuse about not bringing the odd gift home is that, when in commerce, he found that it was the unfaithful husbands who were for ever loading their wives with gifts – Ergo, no gifts means fidelity and if I ever receive an unexpected pair of nylons or a length of terylene I may know the worst.) He becomes enormously preoccupied with his work and pays no act of attention to anything else for days at a time. (If I wanted to be unfaithful nothing would be easier to conceal.)
How often have I said just this! (Ad Astra)
He would drive the very feminine type of woman round the bend in no time because he would forget to talk to her, would never notice what she was wearing and would be not in the least concerned with what she did with herself during the day. Now, all these traits can at times be both irritating and depressing for a wife but their golden side shews clearly on occasion.
Take the matter of children. John thought four enough but if I wanted five and was prepared for all the work involved, well he wouldn’t fuss and he more or less forgot about the matter for nine months and has remembered it from time to time since for a brief moment. His attitude to six seems to be similar; five is enough but if six it must be…
He is out and away a great deal so that he forgets about the children for hours at a time; when he remembers, he gets a certain kudos from confessing that he is the father of five (and he enjoys the varied expressions on the faces of his listeners). But what about earning the money to feed etc. the children? Well, John would always work twice as hard as the next man whatever the number of his dependents; he has a genius for getting jobs that have previously been done by two people; if work is not there he makes it; he has all the northern puritan ingrained attitude to work so he doesn’t work any harder because there are five mouths to feed than if there were only two. He is not a connoisseur of food so he doesn’t miss his caviar
