Chapter 15

Laurella

For the fifth time, I check I’ve changed the towels in the bathroom, and every time I pass the bed, I smooth the sheets. I primp, preen, shave all unwanted hair, slather on body lotion, and dab perfume on my neck, behind my ears, and even in my cleavage. I spend time on my hair and makeup, and try to pick something to wear that ticks all the boxes, with the most important one being easy access. In the end, I go for a simple wrap dress with a tie at the waist. The last thing I need is to be wearing some complicated outfit that takes Callum forever to break into.

Oh hell. Anyone watching me would think I’m desperate and easy. Desperate is certainly a good description. I’m still smarting from our thwarted attempt a few nights ago. I’d even gone so far as to stay at the airport until I was sure Alessia’s flight had taken off. My other family members are safely in Italy—of that I am sure. Nothing stands in our way now.

This is happening. Tonight.

My pulse jolts, and my heart thuds against my ribcage. I’ve never been a casual-sex kind of girl, but I don’t know how to describe this thing with Callum. He keeps using words like ‘mine’, and he’d called me his girlfriend at the family dinner. We certainly haven’t rushed into anything—not least because we’ve spent ninety percent of the time at each other’s throats since we met. But still, after tonight, will I need to change my Facebook status to ‘In a relationship’?

I glance at my watch. He’s late. What if he doesn’t turn up at all? After all, he tricked me in Chicago. Maybe that’s all this is—an elaborate ruse to cause me even more hurt.

I pace. Every few steps, I stop, check my cell, see he hasn’t texted, then toss it aside. When the anticipated knock at my door finally arrives, I jump. My mouth dries up, and I have to grab a towel to wipe my damp palms. With a glance in the mirror, I run a hand over my skirt and answer the door.

In direct contrast to his usual business attire, Callum has gone for a completely casual look. If he intends to turn me on without even touching me, he’s succeeded. A pair of faded denims cling to his thighs, and his white shirt is unfastened at the neck, giving me a peek of smooth, tanned skin. He smells delicious—of woodsy bodywash and designer cologne that makes me want to bury my nose in his neck and take a long breath. My stomach tilts, and I swear my heart actually skips a beat.

“Are you going to let me in?” he asks, a curve to his lips telling me I’ve probably been standing here gawking for some time. He holds up a bottle of red wine. “I brought supplies.”

I step back, heat rushing to my cheeks. “Of course.”

He strolls inside, curving a hand around my neck
