In June 1968 my dearest and beloved Grandma Smith died on the couch in her dining room. That dining room had precious memories for me, because that’s where our family had often gathered for Thanksgiving dinner, waiting to eat the turkey we always got from the newspaper company as a gift because my brothers and I peddled newspapers. From the time I was nine until I was twelve, I stayed at Grandpa and Grandma’s for one week during the summer. Those were such carefree, happy times with my grandma, whom I loved so much. She made one lemon pie just for me during those stays because I loved it, and she told me I could only have one piece each day, as more wouldn’t be good for me. She did many special things for me, like taking me to Massillon on the Greyhound bus to buy a new pair of Buster Brown shoes. She bought those shoes one or two sizes too big to make them last, putting cardboard inside so I could wear them until I grew into them. I loved watering her garden and even using her push mower to mow her grass. When I turned Amish, that experience came back to me when I used a push mower to mow our yard.

All these precious memories flooded my mind as I mourned my dear relatives. This was a sad time, and I felt almost lost without them.
