Chapter 14

Gail leaned against the counter as she waited for the kettle to boil. It had been a difficult and yet strangely rewarding morning. She had given someone peace, had freed them from an eternity of torment, and it felt good. It balanced out the fear from the night before. Subconsciously, her hand went to her neck. Though she had put makeup and a scarf over the bruising, it still hurt and Cindy, her friend, had spotted something was wrong. For some reason, she ended up telling her what happened and ever since, Cindy had been trying to persuade her to stop.

“Jesse is right,” Cindy said, her big eyes so wide Gail almost laughed. She couldn’t look more surprised if the business man had stumbled out in front of her.

“You must stop, ghosts are dangerous, you should...” Her hands flapped about in front of her as she tried to find something appropriate to say. “You should forget all about spirits. Why don’t we go for a night out instead?” Cindy dropped her hands in defeat and Gail hugged her tight.

As Cindy walked away looking as if she had just witnessed a car crash, Gail knew she couldn't quit, she had to carry on. The spirits were there, she couldn’t not see them.

With her eyes closed, she took a long, deep breath and tried to calm down. Why did people not understand? Why did they all want to take the easy way out? Though both Jesse and Cindy had her best interests at heart, they were wrong.

This was her responsibility. She had been given this gift and it would be wrong to ignore it. There would be tough times ahead, but if she could just prove to them both that she could help people, then surely they would understand.

As she poured a coffee, she started to make a plan. Tonight, she would visit the wife of the businessman from the car park. Why had she not asked for his name? How was she going to tell the woman the ghost of her husband had left her a message when she didn't even know his name?

This just proved how much she had to learn and how much she needed Jesse to help her. Names were so important and he would remember to ask, whereas she got caught up in the excitement.

Trying to work out what to do, she sipped at the coffee. The boiling liquid scalded the top of her mouth. Biting back a curse, she added more milk just as a text notification sounded on her phone.

She hoped Jesse was calling and pulled the phone from her pocket. Before she could read the text, the phone was already ringing. Mark’s name lit up her screen. Her heart kicked up a beat and she answered it instantly. Was he all right?

"Hey Mark, how are you?"

"Did you get my text?” Mark asked, his voice so high with panic it sounded a little unhinged.

"I just got it, give me a second to read it."

Gail pulled the phone from her ear and opened the text.
