Chapter Nine

After our talk and spending most of the night at The Den, I wanted to do something nice for Jade. She wouldn’t be off again for a few weeks, so I had more than enough time to get everything in order. The full moon lined up perfectly, but unlike the last two times when we went to The Den, I wanted to do something else.

I didn’t just want to invite her to my home. I wanted to share my world with her, which meant we’d have to use my car. While she could’ve seen a perfect snapshot of my life inside my apartment, she’d get to see even more of it out in the woods I once called home.

The thought of going back there made me anxious, but at the same time, I couldn’t imagine taking Jade anywhere else.

There was a risk of running into other wolves, some of which I might’ve been related to, but I didn’t care. I wanted Jade to see the paths I used to run. I wanted to shift without fear.

Most importantly, I wanted to run with her.

“I think it’s a lovely idea,” my aunt said on the other side of the line. “If you’re this head over tail about the girl, then I’m all for it. You have my blessing, though you know you always have.”

“I do,” I said, “but talking it over with another wolf helps.”

“Don’t let anyone question your right to be happy. If they get in your way, call me, and I’ll come right over.”

I laughed at the image of my aunt barreling down a bunch of wolves, then continued. “For all their sakes, I hope it doesn’t come to that.”

“But if it does…” My aunt trailed off, then let out a long breath. “I’m happy for you. After all your struggles, I want you to be happy.”

“I am. Happy, I mean. Probably the most I’ve been in my life.”

“And that’s how you know it's meant to be. There’s no magic message in the sky or secret song from your wolf. If you feel that fire in your gut, that’s all you need to know.”

“But how do I tell her?” Asking Jade to go with me on a run was one thing, but insisting she was my mate? Wasn’t it too soon?

“When the time is right, you’ll know.”

There were times I loved my aunt for her secrecy, but now wasn’t one of them.

“You aren’t going to tell me, are you?” I asked.

“Nope. This is something every wolf has to do on their own.”

Knowing I wouldn’t get anywhere if I begged, I thanked my aunt, then hung up and tried to think of something else.

“Now what am I supposed to do?” I glared at my phone, then shoved it in my back pocket before pacing the hallway between my bedroom and living room.

I’d never asked a human to visit my hometown before. Hell, I hadn’t even asked the few wolves I’d met. No one felt special enough for me to show them where my life started.
