Chapter Sixteen

Parker had knocked three times and was about to turn away.

“Come in if you must.”

She stuck her head through the door. “I just wanted to see if you were okay. I can leave.”

“No.” Kate waved at her, clearly a little sleepy. “I thought you were someone else. Please come in.”

Parker looked around. “Where’s all your stuff?”

“In my room.” Kate gave her a weak smile.

She raised an eyebrow, wanting to ask why she hadn’t had everything brought down. But it looked like the discussion with Jazmin had taken a lot out of Kate.

“This isn’t my room,” Kate said. “I’ve got a room upstairs and one at Colleen’s. I should have my own place, but I don’t, so I had to move back in here.” Kate yawned.

“If you need to rest, I’ll leave. I can come back later.”

“Stay, please.” Kate rolled onto her side and looked at Parker. “The pain meds make me sleepy, but I’d love to have some company, if you don’t mind that I’ll probably fall asleep on you at some point.”

“Are you in a lot of pain?” Parker didn’t want to imagine how much pain Kate was in. She wished she could lay her hands on her and pull it from her body. Maybe if the tests were a match, that’s what she’d be doing.

Kate pushed herself up to a half-seated position. “Why don’t you come sit with me for a while?” She pointed to a chair in a corner. “Jazmin gave me an injection for the pain. It’s the only kind that seems to do the trick these days.”

If she really wanted to know what the business with Jazmin was about, this was her opening. But did she actually want to know? Wouldn’t it just hurt her all over again?

“Penny for your thoughts?” Kate asked.

“Who is Dr. Callahan to you?”

“I met her during a medical trial a little over two years after you left. She was working on the trial together with two other doctors. Back then, Jazmin was still a resident.” Kate nibbled her lower lip. “I was the youngest person in the trial and had little in common with the other participants. Jazmin and I were similar ages so we ended up talking a lot, not only about trial related things, but personal stuff, our dreams and goals in life.”

Parker pushed her fists between her thighs to hide them. This wasn’t what she wanted to hear. Kate and Jazmin had known each other for almost the entire time she’d been gone. How could it not have turned into something deeper?

“I went back to see my old specialist after the trial ended. I saw Jazmin there, and she asked me out for coffee. She was no longer my doctor and I’d always enjoyed talking with her, so I said yes.”

Parker closed her eyes and slowly inhaled. “And then what? A few coffees turned into dinner and a date, and the rest is history?”

Kate whipped her head around and stared at Parker. “What makes you think that we’re more than friends? I told you I was single.
