CHANCE MEETINGS

Scheduled to meet Seth at a new Ecuadorian restaurant in Midtown, Eleanor vowed to get more information about Jonathan Neel. She feared asking her blind date for romantic gossip directly but figured that somehow or other, since he’d been so chatty on the phone, she’d get the young man talking and lead him on from there. Standing back now from the mirror on the closet door, she surveyed her outfit—a dark green knit dress with a deep V-cut in the front. It looked fine, sexy librarian chic, though her hair was full of electricity. Since New York had grown frigid in the last twenty-four hours, she would have to wear a hat and a heavy coat to the restaurant. As she fingered the velvet on her coat collar, suddenly it came to her that it was not so much Jon Neel’s new girlfriend she needed to check up on, but a woman concurrent with Sasha. Men usually blew up relationships when they had someone else. Yes, that must be the answer, though she had no idea how to learn whether or not it was true.

Seth had announced that he was tall, “burly,” he said, and would be wearing a black leather jacket and a blue shirt. She recognized him immediately, though the noisy restaurant was packed with Friday night drinkers availing themselves of a dazzling display of appetizers laid out on the bar. Instead of crushed, her hair popped out of her hat more electric than ever, and she patted it aggressively as she sat down before him, trying to smile. He was a shy but eager sort of person, and he and Eleanor began talking right away about various computer problems they’d each been experiencing at work. “The whole system at LaGuardia and Knole is teetering on the brink. It’s completely overloaded, and no one really knows quite how to get around its limitations. Memory overload especially, what with layouts and pictures, videos and every other damn thing, I’m constantly upgrading, but that involves explaining to everyone, and believe me, with some of those people, it’s hopeless.” Seth grinned selfconsciously as he drank an Ecuadorian beer.

Smiling at his description of the ad people athwart their own machines, she sipped a cocktail consisting of rum, tequila, and lime juice, called an Esquisito. From what she’d seen already, she was surprised they ever recovered enough from their attention deficit disorder to sit down and type. She told him of her job in Ithaca, her new work in Manhattan, and of an actual brain-mapping operation she had watched earlier in the day. “The patient has been epileptic since she had a cancerous tumor removed years before, and now they’re trying to treat her recurrent seizures. Apparently the childhood operation left scar tissue that was causing all the trouble, and in this next surgery the doctors wanted to remove that scarring without damaging the speech area in her brain. It was incredible. I stood off to the side and stared straight into
