Megan

“Mrs. Seymour, what on earth is the matter?”

I planted my feet so she couldn’t pull me any further. Beverly Seymour was notorious for getting her way, but I’d never known her to resort to being so physical.

“I’m sorry, dear. I’m just so concerned.”

“About what?”

“I heard your father is sick.”

I chuckled. “It’s just the stomach flu. It’s kind of you to care, but he’s not dying or anything.”

Her hand slapped across her ample chest. “Oh, heavens, dear. I should hope not.”

“Well, if that’s all—”

“Megan, sweetheart, the Yule log.”

I tilted my head and narrowed my eyes at her. “Yes…?” I prompted.

She took a deep breath and rolled her head and eyes. “Your father is in charge of it. I need to know if he’s finished it and the sleigh. And what about the Angel Tree? Is your mother going to be able to have it ready? And what about all the other things? And now Emalee Abbot isn’t able to get her things done…” She fanned herself with her hand.

“Oh, um.” It hadn’t even been a thought in my mind. “I’m not sure how far Daddy is with the Yule log. But I can promise you it will be finished in time. And the Angel Tree will be ready.”

Beverly shook her head. “Are you sure? I don’t want anything to go wrong. And it must be the best ever.”

She wasn’t making any sense. “Has there been a problem in the past? Honestly, Mrs. Seymour, I don’t understand why you’re suddenly so concerned. My parents should be back on their feet in a couple of days, not to mention they have me.”

She looked over my shoulder, then pulled me further into the room. I knew Clay was watching, and I practically felt him growl at her assertiveness, so I glanced back and held up a finger, silently asking him to give me a minute.

She leaned in close. “No one knows this. I was waiting for our council meeting this week to let them know because I didn’t want to cause a huge fuss.”

I mentally snorted. Beverly Seymour loved nothing more than to cause a stir. Case and point, her current needless concern. “A fuss about what?”

“I got a call from a representative of Destination magazine. Their list of choices for the top U.S. towns to visit for the holidays released a few days ago, and our fair, little town of Sterling Mill was listed.”

I was sure my eyes lit up like the Christmas tree down the hall. “That’s amazing!”

“Shh.” She looked around as if she expected the elves to pop out and write her up on the naughty list for talking about it. “This puts our little town on a national platform. It’s important for everything to go as expected. It means we’re going to get more than the usual number of outside visitors this year. Just once, I need everything to go right. This is important for our town. It could bring more tourists during our off-season, which would be a real boon for our economy.
