I took a photo on my phone, and then the five of us squeezed in front of the list and took selfie after selfie.

“I feel like we just got initiated,” Julio said.

“Do we need a handshake?” asked Paula.

“Or should we all run around the garden naked?” Jesse joked.

Andy laughed and handed us each a glass. “Let’s just raise a toast,” he said, pouring whiskey into each of our glasses. “This is good stuff. Straight from Scotland.”

“To CloseReader!” we all said, and clinked our glasses together. As I tipped the whiskey down into my throat, I felt it slowly start to burn and tears popped into my eyes. I looked around at the others; Jesse and Paula were in mock agony at the alcohol’s taste, while Julio was calmly onto his second drink. I remembered the feeling I had at Orr Hot Springs earlier that year with Kyle, when I realized that I was like a string on an instrument about to snap, and that story my grandmother loved to tell of Paganini, whose strings snapped one by one throughout a concert. I started to think about what happened after the concert was over, when he had to replace each string. Later, perhaps the soundboard and the bridge—and eventually the pegs, which would have grown rough and sticky over the years—would also have needed some upkeep. After each different part of his violin had been replaced and repaired, I wondered, would it have still been the same violin? Would it even matter?

Suddenly, Paula poked me in the ribs, and I coughed, laughed, and held out my glass for another shot.
