We left the safety of the cave and stepped out into the silver night. Caleb walked forward a few paces ahead of me as he let his wings unfurl from his back. The huge black canopies burst out and settled. He turned back to face me and held out his hand.
“Ready?”
I took the vampire’s hand and he scooped me into his arms. Then he crouched down and vaulted up into the air with a single explosive jump. He ascended about twenty feet up from that jump alone, and as we started to fall back down again he opened his wings fully and let them catch the air beneath us.
Caleb fell through the air with elegant grace, his giant wings beating powerfully as we flew over the dark forest. The sheer sensation of flight was amazing, something I think I could never get tired of. I looked up at him and saw his red eyes fixed on the castle in the distance. Turning my head I saw the castle on the mountain ahead of us, it’s many windows twinkling with the flickering flames of a thousand magical candles.
It was probably a mile away or so, but with Varga’s wings we got there in no time. As we came over the roof he didn’t immediately land, instead he weaved through towers and circled around the castle.
“I thought you might like a little look!” he shouted over the rushing wind. As a matter of fact I did. As we came over the crest of the mountain’s peak I gasped to see more castle stretching down the other side of the mountain. Just how large this place was I couldn’t say. There were easily dozens of huge stone towers and too many buildings to keep count of.
This place truly was magical.
Caleb flew down to the opposite end of the castle and he circled back again in the air, his wings beating wildly as they took us up to the peak once more. There was a visible point where snow became a regular fixture. Parts of the castle was so high up on the mountain it seemed like there would always be snow.
As we arrived back at the top Caleb’s wings began to slow and he guided us towards one of the tallest towers in the castle. With one last strong pull his wings set us down on the tower’s balcony. They folded neatly into his back and he walked forward, opening the balcony doors with a flick of his wrist.
“Where are we?” I asked as we stepped inside. The dark space lit up upon our entrance, revealing a sleek master bedroom furnished in black and grey. A huge rug filled the center of the room, and a four poster bed rested against the back wall. Caleb placed me down on the floor.
“This is my bedroom,” he said. “Somewhere another person hasn’t been for many, many years.”
I arced a brow in disbelief. “Really?” I said, crossing my arms. “None of your other slaves came here?”
“When do you think I last took a slave?” Caleb asked.
