Skye
When an entire week went by without seeing or hearing anything about Janie, I decided that it was time to track her down. I wasnât going to be a stalker or anything, I just wanted to talk to her again. I needed to make sure that she was okay.
After work one night I decided to go to the bar that Iâd seen her working at when Iâd gone out with a coworker for drinks. It was a Wednesday, the same day Iâd been there before, and I was hoping that she had a set schedule there. I got stuck in the lab at work a bit longer than I wanted though, and when I got to the bar, I didnât see her anywhere.
âIs Janie working tonight?â I asked another waitress.
âYeah, but sheâs on break right now. What do you want with her?â The woman gave me a hard look, like maybe she thought I was there to serve a subpoena.
âIâm a...friend.â
âOh, well in that case then, I think sheâs probably out in the back courtyard. Itâs through that door.â She pointed to a short hallway.
âThanks.â
It was a warm, dry night, unusual for this time of year in Seattle, and I could see why Janie wanted to take her break outside. I walked out the back door of the bar, which opened into a courtyard where I knew they had bands perform on weekends in the summer. Janie was sitting at a picnic table at the far end, eating a sandwich and reading something on a tablet in the fading light.
âHi Janie.â
She startled at my voice.
âOh my God, I was so engrossed in my book I didnât even hear you coming,â she said ruefully. âWhat are you doing here, Skye?â
âLooking for you.â I gestured at the table. âIs it okay if I join you for a few minutes?â
âOkay.â
She looked at me expectantly as I mentally pulled up the prepared words Iâd memorized.
âI want to apologize to you for our scene last week. I realize that something I did upset you, and I want to assure you that was not my intention.â
I still wasnât quite sure what exactly that was, but Iâd learned long ago it was easier to apologize anyway.
Janie gave me a soft look. âYou donât need to apologize. It wasnât you, it was me. I freaked out.â
âWhy?â
She looked around, a slight pink flush rising on her cheeks.
âIâve never kissed a woman before,â she said.
âYou didnât like it?â I asked, trying to not look surprised at her admission.
That had been the best kiss of my life. I was going to be extremely disappointed if she told me that sheâd hated it.
âNo, I uh, I liked it. Itâs just that, besides the fact that Iâve never kissed a woman, Iâve never had a woman go down on me or...you know, use their hand on me like that and it just, well, it created a lot of confusing emotions for me.â
âI didnât realize any of that.â
âHow could you?â she asked.
âItâs more than that though, isnât it?â I pressed.
