I’d been hoping the guys from the audition wouldn’t recognize me, but that was too much to ask for, especially since I hadn’t secured a job with them, and I wouldn’t have but a few dollars in my pocket after I’d paid my bills to Rose and Uber, not to mention food. But I was sure I could eat here if it came to me doing without.

It was strange how a man felt with a few dollars and a job, even if it wasn’t an ideal one.

The group of guys who’d audition had that comfortable look on their faces, and I realized that they had been hired. One of the guys stopped and smirked, and there was always one. “Look who’s here... Dr. Dreamy.” I recognized the dude, because he was the one whose act went after mine. He was the one more nervous than me. He stripped as a fireman. I couldn’t remember his stage name, and wasn’t interested simply because of his taunts. In my opinion, he wasn’t that good. Nothing to write home about. He was average, and his performance was overrated, but what did I know.

However, Clay made an effort to give him a standing ovation, after he had seen me when I peeped in to see what the competition had looked like. Like I said, nothing to write home about.

The other dancers went on their way, and didn’t stop to glare at me as if I was road kill. They headed over to the table where Commando was sitting with his young blond who was wearing a ponytail and dressed in a pair of white linen slacks, and an expensive shirt opened, and underneath a tee, looking like a playboy, if that was a look. The blond leaned over and kissed Commando as if he’d waited his entire life to be noticed by him, and to show me that I wasn’t as important as he. I wasn’t and didn’t want to be with Commando.

The smile he’d offered Commando said so much. It was wide and the way his palm caressed Commando’s cheek, anyone seeing the adoration he’d heaped on Commando would know that it had been honest warmth and desire. He wasn’t pretending, he was in love with Commando.

I couldn’t say how Commando felt about him, because all I could see was he treated the blond as if he, Commando, was the sun and he was gracing the young blond with his warmth.

I turned my attention back to the dick who was trying to make a joke at my expense. This one guy had muscles everywhere, but he had been shorter than the six-foot look-a-likes who brought their attention back to me by their curiosity.

All four guys turned and acknowledged me sitting with an empty bottle and an empty dream before me. At that minute their eyes roved over me before they realized there was nothing to see here.
