Sundai broke the kiss and stepped away from him. Turning, she headed down the hall alone, in the dark. The man was...loyal, but she would not risk him. He wanted to protect her and this made her feel...well, she did not know exactly. However, she would protect his life to the very end.

In reality, this was a family rite she had to do alone. Her ancestors had dictated this, long before she was born.

She turned the corner to take the long walk down the tunnel. Her uncle had told her it was the fifteenth door down the hall. She began to count as she walked, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8. She stopped and shook her head. The thought of Buzz and his kisses was messing with her brain and she had to stop thinking about him. At least until after the mission was over.

She turned back and went to the beginning again. As she walked along the long corridor she started her count again, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... When she hit door ten, she slowed down to search for the symbols engraved on the door panels.

When she found her own coat of arms, she reached for the door knob. She felt surprised when the knob turned without the key inserted into the lock. She pushed the door open carefully and nothing was on the other side except complete darkness. Using the flashlight, she swept the room carefully then stepped inside.

She stopped as a scent reached her nose and she knew this scent should not be here. Someone waited here in the dark for her to arrive. Clearing her mind, she used her other senses while she ducked and swayed as whoever was in the room began to battle. Then she smelled more than one scent and the battle began for real.

She got some hits of her own in and after a few of them she realized there were three men here, not just one or two. She took blow after blow but she gave as good as she got. One of the men screamed as her blade hit its mark. She couldn’t see how bad he was hit but she knew she couldn’t stop either. She struck out again and hit another person in the dark. Then she was struck by something other than a fist and the blow she took stunned her.

When she was hit again, she went down in a daze. She thought she heard footsteps running away from her but she couldn’t be sure. She knew she had to move or she would never move again. Pain washed over her as she began crawling toward the door.

Sundai made it out to the hall—the pain got too much for her and she collapsed. She whispered, “Buzz...” Then she lost consciousness.
