TWELVE

As I drove along the lakeshore, back to New Orleans, my spirits lifted and I wondered if maybe there wasn’t as much to worry about as I imagined when Gunner told me to leave. Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with the drama of a situation, and having removed myself from it, I wondered if my imagination had worked overtime.

But when I thought about it carefully and reviewed what had been said, I came to a couple of conclusions. Gunner had been definitive, and from our brief acquaintance he didn’t seem like the type of person who’d exaggerate. I was right to worry, especially as I didn’t really know what I was in for. But I was on my way to someone who could help me. I was driving to Tarot & Taboo, and I knew Candide LaMontagne could help me if anyone could. It was ironic that I thought that after buying this resort I’d be spending tons of time at the hardware store. Now it seemed like that time might be matched by the time I spent at the occult store.

I trained my eyes on the road in front of me, every now and again looking across the lake shore and into the trees that lined it, making an effort to decompress from the stress that threatened me. I left my previous home because of the stress of dealing with Liz Connelly and her wendigo alter ego. It had to be a million and one chance that I had somehow ended up back in another stressful and extraordinary situation. Was it me? Was there something about my aura that attracted trouble?

Someone else who would be able to help me by putting things into perspective was Suri, and I decided I’d call her when I got closer to the city. I brought the car onto a lay-by at the side of the road once I was nearing The Big Easy, picked up the phone and dialed her number. The phone rang a few times, but instead of her answering, the call went to voicemail. I tried again a few minutes later to the same effect. Should I leave a message? Probably not. If Suri knew I was in town, she’d insist on me going to visit, and I only wanted a quick chat. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see her, but if I went, it would mean being away from the resort for even more hours than my trip to Tarot & Taboo would entail, and I didn’t want Gunner thinking he’d won, that I’d left. I refused to give him the satisfaction. After the werewolves had left the lake, I could come back to visit Suri, and leave Gunner to clean up the mess. It would serve him right for…everything.

That thought sustained me on the rest of the journey and I reached Tarot & Taboo happy. I parked right outside the store, peering at it from the car window to see if it was open.
