Fifteen

After dinner Dallas, Dolly and Shasta sat in the front room and watched President Kennedy’s live press conference on the console television. The President occasionally fingered papers on the lectern and spoke with a somber tone like a losing coach speaking to a group of disgruntled fans. His speech was brief and to the point. He called the Russian triumph of space a most impressive scientific achievement, “one that all humans can admire.”

As soon as the press conference concluded, Dallas flipped off the television, returned to his chair and began thumbing through the Klamath Falls Herald and News classified section. He was trying to get a handle on the worth of some of his haying implements, just in case the government forced him out of business. Dolly and Shasta went to the kitchen to finish up the dishes. Dallas could hear them out there talking but could make out only a few words. Goddamn, he probably needed a hearing aid. He went back to reading.

After the dishes were washed Dolly pulled the plug and began to peel off her pink, latex gloves. She said, “Too bad she wouldn’t talk to you.”

Shasta reached for a plate. It was still warm through the thin towel. She began drying the plate. “I really wanted to get her perspective. Find out what she thought about termination.”

“Don’t take it personal. Most Indians won’t talk, especially the older ones. Guess they don’t trust white people. If one of her grandsons was around, maybe.” Dolly was interrupted by lights coming up the drive and called to Dallas, “You expectin’ anyone?” She moved to the doorway and repeated herself.

“Floyd said he and Tillie might stop if they got home from town early enough.”

Dolly, hands on her hips, directed an icy glare at Dallas. “Wish you’d said something. I could have fixed up a special dessert.”

“No big deal.”
