Chapter 4

“For a man with a secret, you seem to want me to root it out.”

Marc grinned at Wolf’s observation. “I have no notion what you’re talking about.”

Wolf snorted.

“Besides, it isn’t ready.”

“So it’s not at the hot pool?”

“No,” Marc said and turned to take Wolf’s hand. “My muscles are aching. I need a soak.”

A private soak. He was used to spending his days apart from Wolf, each man at his own work. But the past two weeks, working on the surprise for Wolf, had made him crave his husband’s presence. His physical closeness. Anticipating Wolf’s reaction to the cave had him wanting the man day and night. Their bed had been even more active than usual lately.

Thus this trip to the hot pool. He’d lured Wolf away from supper—not an easy task—so that they’d have it to themselves.

The pool was one of Marc’s favorite things about their new home. Their neighbors had brought them to it soon after their journey from Britannia’s southwestern coast. The first time Marc had eased into the steaming water, Wolf had laughed at him in a fond, rolling chuckle.

“You’re never going to leave this place.”

“I may not. We’d best set up a long-term camp.”

He visited often, usually with Wolf, but sometimes with Tiro or Philip to talk about goings-on in the region. His grandchildren preferred the small ponds and lakes in the area, but Marc needed this water’s heat to soothe the ever-present aches in his muscles and bones. Wolf had the same soreness, to the point where their groans as they slipped into the water tended to make the surrounding forest seem full of growling bears.

Mist hung about the glade as they stepped into it from the trees. Marc wasted no time stripping his clothes and boots, then helping Wolf dispatch his. As much as he wanted to climb into the pool, Marc took a moment to appreciate his man’s body. Smoothing his palms over Wolf’s broad chest raised a rumble from deep within. Marc leaned forward to kiss his breastbone and felt it thrum against his lips. He let his hands map Wolf’s shoulders and arms, his belly and his back, his rump. He was silver now, almost completely. He was content to keep his beard trimmed short, but the hair that grew from his head still trailed down his back in a long queue. Marc worked loose the leather thong that kept it gathered and slipped his fingers into Wolf’s hair.

“Magnificent,” he said.

Wolf’s smile humored him. The man truly didn’t know his own appeal.

Marc certainly did. He pulled him to the pool.

They sat in the water, shoulder to shoulder, for several minutes. Marc let the heat seep into him. Wolf’s deep sigh echoed his own contentment.

“So what are you up to?” he muttered lazily after a few minutes.

“I’m not telling.”

“All right.”

Marc laughed and looked at him. “You give up easily.”

Wolf smiled, his eyes still closed. “I’m a patient man.”

A quality Marc had never been accused of exhibiting. “Content to just sit back and wait, are you?”

Wolf shrugged.
