Chapter eleven

Creed

I was amazed by how quickly Rosie bounced back from the news about Mikey. She had gone from a puddle of tears back to fighting shape literally overnight. I’d never really seen that before. Growing up, my mother and I never cried, at least not in front of other people. My sister and my dad, on the other hand, were plagued by their tears for days. Once that bottle was open, it took a lot for them to close it.

Grace’s reaction to Mikey being denied bail was more in line with what I was used to.

A few days after I broke the bad news to her, I knocked on her bedroom door and eased it open, peering into the gloom. “Grace? You awake?”

I heard an affirmative grunt come from a lump of blankets on the bed.

I inched into the room, closing the door behind me. Empty dishes littered her desk. Piles of dirty laundry were scattered around the floor. I tried to ignore the stale, sour smell of her unwashed sheets. “You think you’re gonna get out of bed today?” I asked quietly.

Another grunt. This one was harder to interpret.

I sat on the edge of her mattress with a sigh. “I know that this has been really hard for you, but you can’t stay in bed forever. You still have to keep living your life.”

She didn’t respond. The lump rolled away from me.

“Please, Grace. You can do it. I know you can. You just have to change your perspective. try to look on the bright side.”

I finally received a muffled response. “What bright side?” Two hazel eyes peered at me from between the folds of her blankets.

“You’ve got time to yourself for once,” I pointed out. “You can think about what’s important to you. Make plans. Set goals. Be independent.”

Her voice was cold. “Me getting thrown to the wolves isn’t a good thing. There isn't a bright side here, Creed. Mikey’s in prison and – and –” Her breath shuddered.

“It’s okay. I swear. Please, you don’t have to cry.” I didn’t know how much more crying I could take. Since I’d come to Texas, I found myself overseeing so many tears that I felt like a new parent. I loved Grace, but I desperately needed a break from the constant onslaught of grief.

“You don’t understand!” I heard the tears in her voice. Shit. Way to go, Creed. “He’s my everything. My rock. My world. How am I supposed to live without him?”

“It might feel that way, but he’s not your world. You have so much else in your life –”

“Like what? Nothing else matters!” She wept, the pile of blankets shuddering.

After weeks of looking after her, I was tired of hearing how little my contribution to her life mattered. I gave her a quiet apology and left her to her sobs.
