Chapter Eleven

Pack Your Bags

BTS barely had time to unpack their bags at the conclusion of their first world tour before they were hard at work on their fourth collection of music, an EP entitled The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2. At a time when many expected a greatest hits package would be put together to give the group time to, creatively, catch their breath, BTS had already decided that the next album would flex some mighty philosophical muscle and messages.

As indicated by the album’s title, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 would be a continuation of the complexities of youth entering life and dealing with the real world, a rather ambitious approach in a K-Pop world populated by lighter than air and predictable songs. The group acknowledged in a 2015 interview with Soompi.com that the song “Run” typified the vibe and social attitude they were trying to convey.

“Part 2 is the second part of our two-part youth story,” explained RM. “The songs are about youth. Part 1 explained how youth was tiring and difficult and it also touched on how we feel like we’re always on edge. Part 2 will have a more adventurous and daring feel to it. It’s natural that people fail or make mistakes but I think it’s a touchy subject for society as a whole. So we wanted to comfort ourselves by saying one mistake or failure is not the end of the world.”

RM continued, insisting that BTS did not want to take the easy way out when it came to their music. “We didn’t want to just blankly say ‘cheer up’ or ‘be strong.’ We really wanted to comfort people our way by producing the music and writing the lyrics ourselves.”

The perceived new maturity and worldliness of BTS come to the band quite naturally. Given the freedom of expression offered by Big Hit Entertainment, BTS had been, surprisingly so by K-Pop standards, outspoken in their attitudes and beliefs about real world issues. The group, collectively, and RM in particular, had publicly come out in support of gay rights. RM has also been upfront in dealing with his own mental health issues, proclaiming in an interview with Kpopism.com when he offered, “I have light and dark issues and I am not always happy.”

Consequently, the boldness on The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 songs is not surprising. The themes of the songs are alternately contemplative, emotional and upfront, especially when it comes to addressing life issues. But the music itself remains very pop and accessible in a tried and true K-Pop sense. Much of this maturity is the result of the freedom proffered by Big Hit Entertainment and its CEO Bang Si-hyuk.

“It’s true BTS has tried a variety of different things,” Bang has told journalists. “But I don’t think they’ve changed. Their music is the expression of their earnest and candid mind. I think we must not meddle in their music. BTS’s own intention is the most important thing.”
