‘If that’s a dud as well?’
‘Then we get NYPD and FBI to plaster his face on TV,’ Zeb replied as they drove back.
Which would be a failure, because it would get the killer to go deep underground. And still carry out his attacks.
They gathered in their office in the late evening, Zeb playing with one of the paper airplanes Beth had made.
‘I’ll transfer the prints to Werner,’ she said, trying hard to sound cheerful. ‘Maybe something will turn up.’
‘Go for it.’ Bear stifled a yawn, waved at them and followed Chloe out.
At about the same time, the general logged into a file and ran a search for Bwana and Roger, using a facial recognition algorithm.
The results came back quickly.
Two files.
He clicked on one.
And blinked when it was empty.
He clicked on the other one.
Nothing in it, either.
He thought for a moment and then reached for a phone.
It didn’t take that long for Werner to look at the fingerprints. He messaged the twins, knowing they would be happy with what he had found, and got back to his reading.
That Nietzsche dude was an awesome writer.
Chapter Thirty-Four
Beth and Meghan were at their desks when Zeb arrived. He had returned to his Jackson Heights apartment the previous night and as a result was the last person to come to the office.
Chloe got his attention the moment he stepped in. She waggled her eyebrows in the twins’ direction.
He looked over to them. They had their backs to him, working on their screens, busy. But their postures. The way Meghan flicked her hair back.
They’re bursting! They’ve found something?
He went to the kitchen, filled his cup with coffee, wandered out. Glanced at his watch.
‘Why’re you all here?’ he asked casually, playing along with whatever the sisters had up their sleeves. ‘Gerlach, Fonseca, Pollenberg, they still need to be watched.’
‘I stopped them,’ Beth replied in a bored voice.
‘Why?’
‘Werner found something strange.’
‘AprintinPollenberg’sapartmentthatwasn’this’ Meghan couldn’t contain herself, words rushing out of her.
‘Sis!’ Beth glowered at her, then broke into a wide grin. ‘We found a print that doesn’t match him! In Pollenberg’s apartment. A male.’
‘It’s him,’ Meghan nodded so fast her hair bounced on her head. ‘Pollenberg’s our killer.’
‘Those two men.’ The general was in his car, using a burner phone to call Bernier.
‘What about them?’
‘They were service personnel. But their files, there was nothing in them.’
‘Nothing? How’s that possible? You folks keep extensive records, don’t you?’
‘There’s only one explanation.’ The general took a breath.
‘What?’
‘They worked in some black-ops unit.’
‘You’re sure?’ National Security Advisor Daniel Klouse rocked back in his chair. The call had been made by one of his contacts in the Pentagon.
‘Yes, sir. The general accessed those files. He then made a call—’
‘Don’t say names.’ It was DC. Walls had ears.
‘Yes, sir. But the person he made the call to doesn’t have access, either.’
‘Thanks, buddy. I owe you one.’
‘I owe you my life, sir. It’s nothing.’
Klouse replaced his phone and frowned. He didn’t like what he had been told. There was no reason for a general to go digging into Bwana and Roger’s files.
