CHAPTER 13
I left the mosque and checked my phone. The phone call hadnât been from Luis. It had been Diane. I looked up Rabbi Benaiah Chesniak. He taught at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. For such an unassuming fellow, he had a long list of PhDs.
I returned Dianeâs call.
âHow is the case going?â she asked.
âIâve run around and talked to a lot of people, but all Iâve really learned is that Anderson is a creep, which I already knew.â
âWell, you must be ruffling some feathers. An FBI agent came to the office asking about you.â
âWow, I must have really pissed them off in the evidence room.â
âWhat did you do, Jack?â
âDonât say it like that! Itâs like you expect me to screw up.â
âNo, but I know how you can be a smartass at the worst times.â
âWell, this time it wasnât that. I saw something they didnât, and now they think Iâm crazy.â
âWhat did you see?â
âApparently I had a conversation with an invisible man in their locked evidence room.â
Diane remained quiet for a moment. âMaybe the man had gotten into the room somehow without being seen.â
âLuis and an FBI agent were with me when I had this whole conversation, and they didnât see a thing.â
Diane became silent again.
âYou think Iâm crazy too.â
âIâve always known you were crazy, Jack. Thatâs part of your charm. This is a little weird though, even for you.â
If she thought I was weird now, I wondered how Diane would react if she knew the whole story about my missing nine years. âWhat did the agent ask about me?â
âMostly character questions, like how well I knew you, what kind of person you are, how your work ethic is, if you like to travel.â
âThatâs all?â
âThey wanted to know what specific cases youâd worked on, but I told them theyâd need a warrant for that kind of information.â
I knew Wittman thought I was crazy and maybe even a jerk, but I was surprised he considered me worth sending someone to conduct interviews. Theyâd already run an extensive background check on me.
âThereâs something else I wanted to talk about, Jack. Meega still isnât eating.â
âStill! I shouldnât have left her so soon after the incident with Animal Control.â
âIâm taking her to the vet tomorrow.â
âYou think itâs a physical illness? She always eats less when I leave town.â
âItâs probably nothing, Jack, but Iâd rather be sure.â
âSave the bill. Iâll reimburse you when Iâm back in town.â
âItâs alright, Jack. This is for my own piece of mind more than anything. Iâm sure itâs nothing, but I wanted to let you know.â
âThanks, Diane. Meega and Alpha are my family. They consider you and Reece family too. I know theyâre in good hands.â
I dreaded calling Luis, but I had to tell him Iâd be gone overnight. Considering I had never told him I was coming here in the first place, that wasnât going to sit well.
